— Barry Wang Ruibang, CEO of Smart Wasp Technology

In the wave of Chinese manufacturing brands going global, Suzhou-based Smart Wasp Technology Co., Ltd. (SMART WASP, hereinafter referred to as "Smart Wasp") stands out with its unique global branding strategy and digital management practices. Its founder, Barry Wang Ruibang, transitioned from OEM production to building a self-owned brand and embraced full digitalization from the very beginning of his second venture in 2015 by making a pivotal decision: to build the entire company on DingTalk.

This company, specializing in intelligent stretch wrapping machines, has sold its products to 91 countries worldwide within a decade, achieving nearly 200 million yuan in annual revenue. Its client list includes leading domestic companies such as Huawei, JD.com, Moutai, and Nongfu Spring, as well as international giants like Tesla and Coca-Cola. Behind all this success lies an invisible partner—DingTalk.

Sticking to Self-Owned Brands to Break Free from Price Wars

In the field of intelligent stretch wrapping machines, European and American brands have long dominated, leaving most Chinese companies stuck at the lower end of the value chain, producing OEM or white-label products. When Barry Wang launched Smart Wasp in 2015, China's manufacturing industry was still trapped in fierce price competition. Yet he chose a counterintuitive path: no more OEM work—instead, he insisted on launching the self-owned brand "Smart WASP" globally, pricing even 25% higher than domestic peers. "OEM is just a transaction; only branding ensures longevity," Wang recalled.

This decision stemmed from his earlier experience importing foreign equipment: "Westerners could proudly demand we use their brand names—why can't 'Made in China' have its own?" Determined to change this, he sacrificed short-term profits and invested heavily in product design, standardized service systems, and brand culture. For instance, among the over 100 employees at Smart Wasp’s Suzhou production base and global headquarters, 30% are engineers—a rarity among similarly sized competitors. Overseas, Smart Wasp requires its distributors to establish standardized service systems, with engineers certified directly by the company.

This commitment soon paid off. During a crisis caused by a product quality issue, Wang took full responsibility, absorbing millions in losses and replacing the equipment with new units even after contract fulfillment had ended. This act earned long-term trust. Today, Thailand’s distributor sent his daughter to intern at Smart Wasp’s Suzhou factory, while the Mexican distributor holds a market share as high as 50%. "We don’t sell cold machines—we deliver love and trust through technology," said Wang.

DingTalk: The Backbone of Global Operations

What enables Smart Wasp’s global operations is an efficient, low-cost digital system, with DingTalk at its core.

In its early days, Smart Wasp had fewer than 30 employees and relied on WeChat for communication. But Wang realized that WeChat blurred personal and professional boundaries, whereas DingTalk’s focus on work made it far better suited for business needs. As the team grew to over 100 people, he personally established an IT department dedicated to maximizing the potential of digital tools like DingTalk. Over time, DingTalk evolved from handling basic approvals and knowledge storage to supporting low-code ERP systems, data dashboards, project management, and even AI-powered translation tools.

An unexpected after-sales incident with a Russian customer turned DingTalk’s Flash Notes feature into a powerful cross-border communication tool. Previously, when overseas customers reported issues via video, different languages required matching with corresponding support staff—but not every language had a dedicated agent. When an urgent request came from Russia, Jianhua Mao, Smart Wasp’s IT manager, discovered that DingTalk Flash Notes offered robust translation capabilities: any video or audio file in any language could be uploaded, and AI would instantly translate it into the desired text. He dragged the Russian video into Flash Notes—and seconds later, a Chinese transcript appeared. The team quickly identified and resolved the problem.

Wang then realized that real-time translation could also be enabled within DingTalk group chats. After activating this feature in the company-wide group, it unofficially became a “passive English learning” channel. Recently, whenever he travels abroad to meet partners, people comment, “Barry, your English has improved again.”

Low-Code Solutions Enable Real-Time Data and Boost Management Efficiency

In the past, key departments such as procurement and sales generated vast amounts of operational data daily, mostly managed via complex Excel spreadsheets. Department heads reported weekly to Wang, but compiling statistics across departments took two to three days each and was prone to errors. The biggest flaw? The CEO always saw data from a week ago.

Smart Wasp’s IT team solved this with DingTalk and low-code platforms. Using Triton Cloud and Jiusheyun—ecosystem partners on DingTalk—they integrated low-code systems with ERP to build a streamlined expense reporting process. Expenses are logged immediately upon occurrence, allowing real-time visibility of daily and weekly totals. Reports can be filtered by department or individual, making progress transparent across teams.

"The greatest value of DingTalk is solving 80% of our current challenges at the lowest possible cost," said Wang, who calculated that the company’s investment in its digital system built on DingTalk and Triton Cloud is only 20,000 yuan per year—yet delivers critical functions like daily expense settlement, weekly profit reports, and automatic R&D cost tracking.

"Spending just tens of thousands a year brings efficiency gains of dozens of times," Wang noted, recalling how he turned down sales pitches from other platforms: "They offer similar features, but at much higher prices and with less cultural fit. DingTalk is like a practical partner for everyday life—reliable and sufficient."

Looking ahead, Wang’s vision is clear: technologically, he wants to become a powerhouse like Huawei; culturally, he aims to build a happiness-driven organization. Digitalization remains key to achieving this. "China’s manufacturing advantage is no longer low cost—it lies in branding, localization, and adopting digital tools that truly suit our needs," he concluded.

Today, Smart Wasp is sharing its digital expertise across its supply chain. "We want to prove that for Chinese SMEs, the digital tool that is both affordable and effective—DingTalk—is the answer," said Wang.

In Smart Wasp’s journey, we see not just the growth of one company, but a microcosm of China’s manufacturing transformation—winning respect through branding, boosting efficiency through digitalization, and shaping the future with a global mindset. And as Wang puts it, DingTalk is indeed the "most cost-effective companion" on this journey.
